We are still alive and well, and still building exceptional boats here in Thomaston! However, with the confluence of a slow economy and two projects that have been stopped in mid-stream, we are moving forward cautiously. As you may know, JB Turner is no longer with us, and we have re-structured from top to bottom. While our overall manpower has declined, we are still strong at 100 employees.

Two years ago we hired two consultants to help us with the financial and management aspects of the company. As a result we have altered our management style and changed key personnel. I want to assure you that we have not been operating in a vacuum, but moving with great care as it has affected some very nice people. We are now moving forward and thought we would share our vision with you.

The first major step has been to streamline our decision making process. Our project managers are now empowered to make decisions quickly, control the entire project, and be held accountable. This allows me to run the company and work on new projects and sales. This is an easy step as we have narrowed down to a very capable and smart group to lead the way.

Another big step has been to alter our accounting, estimation, and budgeting process. We have recently implemented a brand-new marine software to track and relay the financial aspects of all our projects. The new system will use the original estimate and track the hours, materials, updates, and allow more efficient tracking of time cards (hours), inventory, receiving, and above all billing.The importance of this system is to keep everyone informed on all aspects of the project and our owners will be able to access their account on line (eventually).

The words 'Lean and Mean' are used a lot in this economy. With these changes, we aim to make the company more efficient, but also strive to keep Lyman-Morse a pleasure to do business with. Over the last thirty-five years we have had fantastic customers and an excellent crew. Our goal is to keep these relationships - an efficient and well run workplace for our employees directly translates to satisfied customers.

We have a carbon sailboat under construction which continues to move along well. The amazing hydraulic system will run every aspect of the boat, and the rotating thruster for the main propulsion unit, a bow thruster, captive reel winch, Lithium Ion battery system, and hydraulic ram for the main sheet will truly make this a push-button boat. We will be launching her at the end of July - a one-of-a kind at the leading edge of interesting technology. There are not too many yards able to accomplish this and we are bringing in teams from England and Australia as we look for the best in the hydraulic and wireless business.

Our partnership with e Sailing Yachts is doing very well. We have just test-sailed the first two e33s on the St. George River. It is a fast, easy, and fun boat to sail. We hope to sell more as we finish up the third e33, and are working to develop the e27 and e44 models as well.

Despite the slowdown in the new construction side, our service yard continues to gain momentum. We tackled several large refits this past winter, and have a full workload this summer. We were at maximum capacity this past winter and are already filling up for 2010. The service yard crew is an integral part of our company and offers perhaps one of the most talented all around crew anywhere.

We're capitalizing on some of our key strengths and premier facilities to provide services outside the marine spectrum. We have opened up our metal fabrication shop to the outside world and have brought in some excellent projects. We have perhaps the nicest facility in Knox County and an exceptionally talented crew. We're also just wrapping up a major structural and cosmetic renovation on a historic sea captain's home here in Maine. Additionally, the ZeroBase (solar power generator) units are now in Haiti, on mountain tops in the Middle East, wintering at a camp in inland Maine, on an island in Penobscot Bay, and in various parts of the country being reviewed by various organizations. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

We are aiming to stay competitive in the new construction side with a line of semi-custom projects. We have molds from several extraordinary boats including:

·         Ringleader- a 65' express sport fisherman,
·         Whistler - a Hunt 54'cruiser
·         Marquesa 54' - a Chuck Paine/Ed Joy long distance sailboat
·         Mala Conducta -  a Morelli & Melvin 62' catamaran
· Deerfoot 70 by Ulf Rogeberg - a sturdy long distant cruiser meant for high latitude sailing.

With these excellent molds we are poised to jump right in to building a yacht in less time for less money.

Unfortunately, the owner of the Deerfoot 70 has suffered financial setbacks, leaving the project with it 60% complete. We are now looking for someone who would like an exceptional Lyman-Morse built boat which can be available by next summer. There is some very good work that has been done on this boat so we hope someone will step forward. We can supply a complete set of plans and estimates. She has been built to provide safe high-latitude sailing as well as comfortable coastal cruising.

There have been many questions on who to contact with our new "look". We have not changed all that much, but our offices are emptier as the foremen are on the floor where they need and want to be. I've assembled a truly talented core group of people who are helping to lead us in the right direction.

·         Steve Tofield: Customer Service
·         Drew Lyman:  Service Yard
·         Scott Layton:  Brokerage
· Bill Belyea: Chief Project Manager
·         Bruce Hopkins: CFO

Of course, you are always welcome to contact me, too.

The marine business worldwide is undergoing rocky times and we are no exception. We have a lot to offer. With this restructuring, we will be in a better position to guide our customers to successful conclusions of their projects. We're persevering, but another new boat on order would get us completely on track for the next year!

Cabot

Ring Leader "Sets The Path" In February's MARLIN

With the Miami Boat Show rapidly approaching, the boating world is buzzing with sport fishing boat fever. Founded in 2006 by sailmaker
Robbie Doyle and designer Jeremy Wurmfeld,
e Sailing Yachts offers a line of high performance
production boats recognized for their comfort, stability
and ease of sail.

We have begun working together to build the award winning e33 daysailer.
Construction and pre-construction planning have begun
here at the yard in Thomaston on three e33 hulls scheduled
for spring 2010 delivery. We are also working with
e Sailing Yachts to build their e27 and e44 models,
slated for late 2010 and 2011 launches.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/S2IT3H9CN1I/AAAAAAAAAG4/NaV0J3DugB4/s320/6_2_2009_198_cropped.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431925938311018322" />

e sailing yachts founder, Robbie Doyle, commented
“Given e Sailing Yachts plans for growth, we are thrilled
to be working with Lyman-Morse as our exclusive
builder”. About Lyman-Morse, E33 designer and
co-founder Jeremy Wurmfeld added “We believe our
clients will be very happy with their long standing
reputation for value and quality craftsmanship and full
list of services available at their state-of-the-art facility.”

We’ve been working closely with designers Carl
Persak and Jeremy Wurmfeld to streamline the building
process as much as possible. JB Turner and Cabot Lyman
see a lot of opportunity in this new venture. JB, who has
always been a proponent of supporting new designers,
views this as an “excellent opportunity to enter the
production boat building market”. Cabot added,
“Working with Persak & Wurmfeld to build straightforward
boats that are exciting to sail keeps with our
philosophy that simplicity and performance adds to the
customers enjoyment.

Visit www.esailingyachts.com
to learn more about their models.

Yes, this building IS BIG!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 205px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SzDbSyGTiCI/AAAAAAAAAGw/Lz5_Z_x-cLo/s320/112309CNST-5447.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418071467459053602" />

A picture speaks a thousand words. You bet.

Replacing Teak Decks: Lyman Morse's Service Yard

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SyEhbqwg5BI/AAAAAAAAAGo/kwXmCypI6Dw/s320/120709CNST-5596.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413644986294002706" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SyEhbBT6CNI/AAAAAAAAAGg/O15MVx0eDY4/s320/120709CNST-5592.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413644975168162002" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SyEhbGoFTaI/AAAAAAAAAGY/8EAd0ecVW8k/s320/120709CNST-5586.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413644976594963874" />

In addition to our core business of building custom yachts, Lyman Morse also has a bustling service yard. We see a lot of summer work from cruisers and the big boats up from the Caribbean, but over the winter, the service yard crew is responsible for approximately 90 boats. They do everything from standard decomissiong to all-out major refits. This year they are hard at work on a major teak deck replacement project on Metolius, a 83' Royal Huisman sloop built in 1992.

In these pictures you see the Lyman Morse team removing the original decks. Air chisels are primarily used to remove the deck. It is a slow process, as the planks sometimes come over in very small pieces. After this phase is complete, they will detail the decks to make sure they are perfectly smooth and all debris is removed. A corrosion treatment is then applied.

The boat originally had a plywood subdeck between the teak and the aluminum superstructure. We've decided to replace that deck with a composite board which weighs approximately 20-30% less than the plywood! This is a relatively innovative idea and we're excited to be able to put some of our innovation to work.\

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SyEhavoxExI/AAAAAAAAAGI/7ufyOtIVTmE/s320/120709CNST-5576.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413644970423816978" />

Teak Decking Systems created the patterns before all the original decks were removed, and will be back in a few weeks to lay the new one. We'll then rebed all of the deck hardware. Sure, new decks are a nice feature, but another forgotten benefit of this project is that all the deck hardware will get new, fresh seals and will also be inspected for any corrosion, wear & tear, leaks, etc. It is sort of like a "check up" and is very helpful in maintaining the overall integrity of your boat.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SyEhawdediI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/e-flP_Sjbwk/s320/120709CNST-5584.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413644970644895266" />

Check back as we show the progress over the winter.

Lionheart Concerto makes her debut

While we're still several months away from the "official" launch of Lionheart Concerto, we still couldn't resist having Billy Black come up to Maine to take some shots of her recent trial runs.

This boat is the 2nd new build by our customer Ken Sawyer, and is the 5th project he's brought to Lyman Morse. In addition to this project, he totally rebuilt a Toshiba 40', refit a Seguin 46', built the 52' Fairweather, and has had us build a large volume of furniture and architectural pieces for his home here in Maine. Needless to say, we've developed a great relationship with Ken over the years. His creativity knows no bounds and we're always excited to work with him on new projects.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 205px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/Sxe1KEoR0hI/AAAAAAAAAFo/UZzjkCNuECU/s320/111909BTPN-4715.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410992661954941458" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/Sxe1K99S5_I/AAAAAAAAAF4/Wc6j9rP0WC4/s320/111909BTPN-5091.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410992677343913970" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/Sxe1KjSQUEI/AAAAAAAAAFw/5JJHy2ztf_w/s320/111909BTPN-4807.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410992670184067138" />

One of the most unique features of this boat is the fully functioning and impeccably detailed Yamaha player piano in the salon. Long recognized for our craftsmanship in yacht interiors, many of our customers have come to us requesting custom pieces for their homes as well. Over the last several years, we've created some amazing furniture pieces including hand carved beds, chairs and cabinets, plus architectural & millwork features. Our metal fabrication team and our new canvas shop have also had a big hand in helping create unique pieces. The fab shop is just now completing an amazing silicon bronze entryway arch for a luxury home in the midcoast area.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/ShQTLdWFqDI/AAAAAAAAAFA/CYTwTD9Daqw/s320/DSCN2186.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337912545917642802" />

We'll have a booth at the Maine Home and Design Show at Point Lookout in Northport Maine. The show hours are Saturday, May 30 from 10-6 and Sunday, May 31 from 10-4. Our display will be in the Pavilion. The exhibit space has already sold out and they have added additional space so it promises to be a great opportunity to see some of the amazing craftsmanship Maine is known for.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/ShQTbFSn7fI/AAAAAAAAAFI/YpnlM1tyUJk/s320/030509RIME-3968.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337912814338567666" />

We'd love to see you!

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='C. Though entirely different, they do share one thing in common... both are amazingly beautiful yachts we're excited to add to our repertoire!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 157px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SgmQAUBCJoI/AAAAAAAAAD4/XbhEHcfUYy4/s320/Hunt+CW-440.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334953568644507266" />

We'll cover the remarkable performance we've seen with the cat over the past several test sails in an upcoming post, but today is dedicated to Thursday's launch. WHISTLER is a a 54' C. Raymond Hunt design which makes her our largest jet boat to date.

Perhaps one of the most exciting features of WHISTLER is her dinghy "garage". The hydraulic gate and sled which extend out over the jets will allow the owner to launch the 10' tender from the interior storage compartment with the push of a button. Powered by twin 1001 hp Caterpillar C-18s coupled with Hamilton HJ403 water-jets, WHISTLER will cruise in the low 30s with a max speed of 35 knots. She features the fly-by-wire Blue Arrow electronic control system with mouse and joystick for steering and docking ease.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SgmQK6mApXI/AAAAAAAAAEA/ZlsenojKThw/s320/100_1970.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334953750798837106" />

The interior is finished in mahogany with walnut and white Formica accents. Accommodations include an owner's cabin with en-suite head and an office which converts to a guest cabin, also with its own head. Granite galley countertops, maple soles, a lifting 32" television with DirecTV and electric grill help round out the contemporary design. She is also our first new build to use Alexseal paint; her hull is a beautiful Dark Gray with Pegasus Gray pilot house and topsides.

Pictures will be posted after Thursday's launch so you can see the interior and exterior details. We were recognized because of our participation in the Environmental Leaders of Maine program, which we joined in 2005. Our membership in the program asks us to make certain committments to reduce our environmental impact. Thanks to the hard work by everyone here, we were able to exceed our environmental goals as follows:

reduced energy use by 36;
reduced solid waste by 20%
reduced toxic releases by 39%
reduced hazardous waste by 75%
reduced toxic use by 33%

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SfnpGsFJvII/AAAAAAAAADw/Al9pFd4iQwI/s320/Apr+23-24_114.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330547935090949250" />

A big part in helping achieve our goals was the construction of our green building which utilizes energy efficiencies including solar and structural integrated panels, and in-floor radiant heating while also diversifying into renewable energy projects including production of the solar cube.

We also signed another commitment to go beyond compliance for three more years in the Environmental Leaders of Maine, Smart Growth through Smart Production Program. We have made the following voluntary commitments in our Agreement:

To further reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy usage by 20%
To further reduce the total amount of solid waste by 10%
To further reduce the total amount of hazardous waste shipped off site by 10%
Mentor three companies or organizations
Maintain ourISO 14001 equivalent Environmental Management System, including audits, updates, and improvements as needed.

Thermoforming

Thermoforming is the process where core is heated to a pliable forming temperature in an open "oven" to a high-enough temperature that it can be formed into a mold and cooled to a finished shape. Our oven utilizes a long-wave infrared heat -- this is superior to a flame style heat in that instead of heating the material from the outside, it creates a chemical reaction to heat the entire piece quickly and evenly.

Once the entire mold is covered, it is trimmed to form a tightly fitted layer. The core is then removed so that several layers of dry structural laminate can be laid into the mold to form the first layer of outside skin. The core is then refit on top of that, and a final inside skins of structural laminate are laid on top. The entire piece is then bagged and resin infused.

This heating process serves several advantages. Fist, it is faster. Second, it allows us to build a much lighter boat because we can use core with less kerfs -- meaning there are less pockets for resin to pool and add weight to the overall structure.

In this video, our resident expert in composites, Roy Lupien, walks us through the thermoforming process on the 70' we're currently building. Our not-so-expert camera crew decided to stand next to someone using a grinder so there is significant background noise. With so many options in finishes, fabrics, materials, etc. it's enough to overwhelm almost anyone. You then have to add in the logistical concerns... is there enough headroom? Will these cabinets be deep enough? Is there enough space to get in and out of the helm seat? One of the most integral pieces of building a custom yacht is the mock-up. At Lyman Morse, we construct a full-scale mock-up for every yacht that we build so the owner can experience first-hand the boat's spatial relationships and configurations. Even with today's sophisticated technology, this hands-on, walk-through step quickly converts the dream to reality. We created a video with the owners of No Slip III, a Hunt 52' launched in 1994. Though this video is 15 years old, its content remains remarkably timely and on point. We still build them the same way, now in facility in Tenants Harbor. Feel free to stop in the next time you're down there. Though impossible to pick the best, there remains one that has stood out as a perennial favorite amongst our customers and crew. Windwalker II, a Ted Hood designed sloop launched in 1999, holds that distinction.

Perhaps the greatest feature of Windwalker II is her rare combination of luxury and practicality -- this is a yacht you love to admire for her immpeccable aesthetics, yet you're not afraid to actually put her gear to use. Four winters in the Caribbean, 3 Bermuda races, summers in Nantucket and Maine -- she has provided comfort for her owners, guests and crew consistently. In addition, Windwalker II has cruised Nova Scotia, the Chesapeake, participated in the Annapolis-Newport and the Marblehead-Halifax races.

Justin Wiegleb, our Assistant Service Yard Manager, has kept her in tip-top shape as her captain over the years. Justin recalls his favorite experience during the 2006 Newport-Bermuda race. Scorching heat, no wind, seeing other participants in misery... while the Windwalker team all enjoyed her air conditioning, catered food and comfortable berths for all. (Perhaps not the hard core stuff of legend, but not a bad way to travel!)

The owners have had less time to use her over the last year so she is being offered by the Lyman Morse Yacht Brokerage. Asking $1.2M, her next owner is sure to enjoy many happy experiences!

Catamaran Launch Photos

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SeN08iKFk_I/AAAAAAAAACg/5vjvwbdabdk/s320/4-9-09+(10).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324227767792145394" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SeN03yMuZVI/AAAAAAAAACY/dOBFYTCDHw0/s320/4-9-09+(13).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324227686198830418" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SeN0SmAihpI/AAAAAAAAACQ/ZTJsF3HAWek/s320/4-9-09+(26).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324227047271335570" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_po1X1LuKfOs/SeN0K8tcn5I/AAAAAAAAACI/JiH-J9SZeg0/s320/4-9-09+(32).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324226915926318994" />
We had a great time last Thursday afternoon at the launch of MALA CONDUCTA. Earlier this week, we pulled the first two vessels from their long winter hibernation inside the shed and reintroduced them to water. Puffin, a 1969 Aage Walstead cedar planked yawl, and Perseverance, a classic wooden lobster yacht, are both happily sitting at the Renaissance docks. We reintroduced them to the water first so their wooden hulls could soak up some water and swell after drying over the winter.

The yard crew is now in full swing, preparing the rest of our 80+ storage boats for the upcoming season. We are launching our new 62’ catamaran, MALA CONDUCTA, in Thomaston on April 9th. Designed by Morrelli and Melvin of Huntington Beach, CA, the yacht is our first catamaran project.

MALA CONDUCTA will be used for family cruising, but she will also be awesomely fast! We have been directed to keep her as light and nimble as possible which has become the norm here. The hull was constructed of Kevlar/Eglass prepreg outer skins, with P or Nomex core, and carbon prepreg inner skins. The deck was built in a female mold in one large piece; it is also a combination of Kevlar/E-glass and carbon fiber prepregs. We expect well over 25 knots – not bad for a boat with all the amenities.

Though light, she will have all the systems of a full cruising yacht. She features cutting edge lithium ion batteries and an E-plex electrical system designed to keep her lightweight. The E-plex system by Bass Electronics utilizes cutting edge touch screens located throughout the vessel to control lighting and electronics.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Lyman Morse project without impeccable finish work and interior details. The interior will be modern and bright, featuring maple veneers over carbon. Teak and wenge soles, Oceanair Skyscreens, and Corian counter surfaces provide comfortable cruising aesthetics for up to eight guests and two crew.

The owners were very involved in the mock-up review process in which many changes were made. This once again proves what an important tool the mockup is in building a custom boat.

We are really looking forward to screaming around Penobscot Bay on the sea trials!!!!

The actual launch will take place at noon on the 9th, followed by an official launch party at 5:30 pm.

Lyman Morse Begins Work on Deerfoot 70'

We're happy to announce our new project with Ulf Rogeberg, a Norwegian designer based in Copenhagen. This Deerfoot 70' is scheduled for completion in September 2010.

The purpose of this sailing yacht is to provide a safe and manageable vessel to the owner's family for sailing offshore on extended trips. The interior aesthetics of the boat will represent a traditional look and feel, but she will be built to modern standards in every respect. The boat is to be a real cruising boat simple in every detail not only to remain within budget, but to make the boat easier to handle and maintain.

We're pulling the hull mold today so that hull construction can begin in mid-April. Below are some pictures from the activity.
